Iga-Ueno (Ueno City) with a population of about 63,000 is located in western Mie. It is a castle town blessed with lots of nature, and is known for its rich history and culture. It is the birthplace of Iga-ryu Ninja whose origin dates back to the 6th century, and Matsuo Basho, a famous haiku master, was born here. Mie prefecture is in the center of Honshu Island (the main island of Japan), having easy access to the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara. Please add Iga-Ueno to your sightseeing plan in Japan.

2. Specialty Products

Igayaki potery (Iga-ware): Iga-ware has a history dating back to the Nara period (the 8th century). Later in the 16th century, Sen no Rikyu, a major figure in Japan's historical tea culture, appreciated the wabi sabi nature of Iga-ware and since then Iga-ware utensils have been favored by those who enjoy tea ceremony.

Braid: Hand-made braid from this region represents more than half the braid output of the whole country. This braid is the main product in Kimono accessories such as the cord to fasten an obi (sash), key rings, bracelets and brooches among others.

Beef: The origin of Iga beef is said to be dried meat which was one of the Ninja's portable rations. Now it is famous throughout Japan as tender and delicious meat and is called the "Grand champion sumo wrestler of meat".

Dengaku: Tofu on a skewer spread with soybean paste and grilled.

Katayaki: Thick hard cracker is also a Ninja portable ration. It is so hard that you may need a hammer to break it!
